Dr. Surendra Bir Adhikari is a senior mental health administrator with the Ohio Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services where he leads translational research and evaluation of behavioral health disparities and represents the agency in national health equity/disparities networks. As an international expert also on diverse refugees and new immigrants, Dr. Adhikari directed research on mental health, trauma, and suicide among Bhutanese refugees in Ohio, USA. This research led to several important policy efforts: (a) senior level technical assistance to relevant state agencies serving refugee communities; (b) recruitment and training of 40 members of the Bhutanese Nepali community in Mental Health First Aid; (c) as Program Director, recruitment of key professionals for federal agency SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration) sponsored training in intergeneration conflict; (d) invited lecture at SAMHSA; and (e) enhanced mental health awareness in Nepali speaking community via SAMHSA-sponsored translation in Nepali of Campaign to Change Direction's Five Emotional Signs of Suffering. Dr. Adhikari serves on New American Advisory Council of Franklin County, Ohio, USA; and select other high-level committees internationally. In 2018, Dr. Adhikari Chaired the National Opioid Caucus under National Partnership for Action to End Health Disparities of Office of Minority Health, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; and led research on the impact of opioid crisis on minority communities as. A native of Nepal, Dr. Adhikari has a Ph.D. in Medical Sociology and brings along 37 years of experience in public health and development in Asia, Africa and the United States.
