The Lancet Series on Global Mental Health – A Call for Action in 2007, resulted in the establishment of the Movement for Global Mental Health in 2008. Through volunteerism and collaboration, the MGMH has gradually grown to a stage where members are able to share ideas, initiate activities and seek resources, often in partnership with other members.

Since the global mental health movement emerged, it has become a specialise field that places a priority on improving mental health for all across the globe, creating equity in health and mental health, and placing an emphasis on human rights to be underpinned throughout mental health care and service delivery – for persons with lived experience, the focus on human rights in mental health is the foundation for achieving quality of life.

Global mental health has evolved over time as a coalition of civil society and professionals, including persons with lived experience and the groups representing them, who are all devoted to the cause of global mental health.
